George Eastman, a young man from a poor missionary family, is caught between two worlds after his father's death. He meets his wealthy uncle Charles and takes a job at one of his factories, hoping to improve his life. Despite being largely neglected by the Eastmans, George is determined to work hard and achieve his goals. He starts dating a fellow employee, Alice, but is soon befriended by beautiful society temptress Angela Vickers, whom he falls in love with at first sight.
