Shelley Winters, born Shirley Schrift on August 18, 1920, or 1922 according to some sources, in East St. Louis, Illinois, came from humble beginnings. Her mother, Rose Winter, was of Austrian Jewish descent, and her father, Jonas Schrift, was an Austrian Jewish immigrant. She had one sibling, a sister named Blanche.
