The movie opens on D-Day, June 6, 1944, as the 2nd Ranger Battalion fights to secure a beachhead in Normandy. Meanwhile, a mother receives devastating news as her three sons are killed in action, all on the same day. In response, the Army Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, decides to send a team of eight soldiers to find and rescue the fourth brother, Private James Ryan, to bring him home to his grieving mother.
