Matthew was born and raised in the vibrant city of Toronto, Canada, where he spent his formative years surrounded by the rich cultural landscape. After completing his secondary education at Upper Canada College, he made the bold decision to relocate to London, where he would go on to hone his craft at the prestigious LAMDA and Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. His extensive training in the UK theatre scene saw him take on leading roles in notable productions such as 'The Miracle Worker' and 'The Boys in the Band', solidifying his reputation as a talented young actor.
As his film career began to take off, Matthew landed parts in two films directed by the renowned Richard Attenborough, as well as the critically acclaimed Saving Private Ryan (1998). In 1998, he made the decision to return to his hometown of Toronto, where he quickly secured a lead role in the popular sketch comedy TV series History Bites (1998),earning him a nomination for a Gemini Television Award in 2000. His impressive resume also boasts guest appearances on 'Traders', 'The Associates', and 'Twice in a Lifetime'.
Matthew's breakthrough role came when he was cast as Henry Guyrich in the blockbuster film X-Men (2000),in which he underwent a remarkable transformation to play the character of Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.
In 2001, Matthew made the move to Los Angeles, where he married his beloved wife, Tove Limm, on September 28, 2001, in the picturesque setting of Hualalai, Hawaii.
