Curtis Clark, ASC was born in 1946 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to Curtis Lubin Clark, Sr. and Maxine Harris Clark, and is the older of two brothers, with his younger brother being Reginald Clark. He spent his childhood in Texas, where he developed a passion for the arts. Clark's educational background includes studying theater directing and drama at the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago, and cinematography at the London Film School.
Clark began his career in the film industry by shooting documentary and experimental films in England, before transitioning to feature films. His most notable documentary films as director include "Cruisin'" (1977),"British Hustle" (1978),"Shut Down" (1978),and "Blue Suede Shoes" (1980).
As a cinematographer, Clark has worked on numerous critically acclaimed films, including "The Draughtsman's Contract" (1982),"Dominick and Eugene" (1988),"Alamo Bay" (1985),"Extremities" (1986),"Triumph of the Spirit" (1989),and "Talent for the Game" (1991). He has also directed and photographed several narrative short films, including "The Arrival" and "Eldorado".
In addition to his work in feature films, Clark has also shot numerous television commercials, which have earned him recognition for his innovative use of digital technology. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and has served as its chairman of the Technology Committee, where he has played a key role in the development of emerging digital imaging technologies.
Under Clark's leadership, the ASC Technology Committee has made significant contributions to the film industry, including the development of the ASC CDL (Color Decision List),which has been recognized with a prestigious 2012 Prime Time EMMY Engineering Award. The committee has also conducted several camera assessment series, including the ASC-PGA Camera Assessment Series and the Image Control Assessment Series.
Clark is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Directors Guild of America, and has been recognized for his contributions to the film industry through his work on numerous critically acclaimed films and his innovative use of digital technology.
