Biography

Robert Townsend biography:

Robert Townsend is a renowned American actor, director, writer, producer, and television network executive. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he is often referred to as one of the "Godfathers" of the Independent Film World. With over 30 years in the entertainment industry, he has made an indelible mark in Hollywood with his extensive list of credits.

Townsend's career began in elementary school, where he was fascinated with television and started practicing acting out scenes and impersonating famous characters. He was soon discovered by the Experimental Bag Theatre in Chicago, which led to his career as a stand-up comedian and eventually, a full-screen actor.

Townsend's breakthrough role was in the 1984 film "A Soldier's Story," co-starring opposite Denzel Washington. He then appeared in several films, including "Streets of Fire" (1984),"American Flyers" (1985),and "Hollywood Shuffle" (1987),which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in.

The success of "Hollywood Shuffle" led to Townsend directing Eddie Murphy in "Eddie Murphy: Raw" (1987) and creating the popular television series "The Parent 'Hood" (1995). He has also directed several films, including "The Five Heartbeats" (1991),"Meteor Man" (1993),and "Carmen: A Hip Hopera" (2001).

Townsend has received numerous awards and nominations for his work, including over 30 NAACP Image Awards. He has worked with some of the top talent in Hollywood, including Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman, and Chris Tucker.

In addition to his work in film and television, Townsend is a humanitarian and has spoken at various organizations, including the United Negro College Fund and the NAACP. He is also a spokesman for the Milken Family Fund, which recognizes outstanding educators and stresses the importance of education and respect for teachers.

Townsend is a devoted father of four children, including three daughters who have followed in his footsteps and have received their first TV credit for the "B5 Christmas Special." Despite his demanding schedule, he makes sure to spend quality time with his family.

In 2007, Townsend became the President and CEO of Production for The Black Family Channel (BFC),where he created and spearheaded production for the network's top-rated shows. He has recently returned to acting, starring opposite Angela Bassett in the faith-based film "Of Boys and Men" (2008) and directing Golden Globe winner Ving Rhames in the biopic "Phantom Punch" (2008).
