Born in Chicago, Ross grew up in a large family with 10 siblings, and his early life was marked by a period of poverty, having lived in Pembroke, Illinois, which Oprah Winfrey once referred to as the poorest town in the US. Despite these challenges, Ross went on to pursue his passion for acting, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Ross's early success as an actor led to him feeling typecast, and he decided to take a year-long sabbatical to study Shakespeare at the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in England.
