In 1945, the Marines launched a brutal attack on Iwo Jima, a small island defended by 12,000 Japanese soldiers. The iconic flag-raising on Mount Suribachi became a powerful symbol in post-Depression America, inspiring hope and heroism. Three surviving Marines and a Navy Corpsman were brought to the US to raise war funds, but their traumatic experiences made it difficult for them to cope with the hero's image imposed upon them, overshadowing the sacrifices of their fallen comrades.
