Bernie LaPlante, a down-on-his-luck thief, faces a series of unfortunate events: a messy divorce, strained relationship with his ex-wife, and limited custody of their son. As he struggles to turn his life around, he gets caught up in a trap set by the authorities. Just as things can't get any worse, Bernie loses a shoe while heroically rescuing plane crash survivors. Seeing an opportunity, he decides to capitalize on the situation, but his plan backfires when someone else claims credit for the rescue.
