Judah Ben-Hur, a wealthy Jewish prince and merchant, lives in Jerusalem at the start of the 1st century. His old friend Messala, the new Roman governor's commanding officer, arrives, but their differing political views soon drive them apart. During a welcome parade, a roof tile falls, injuring the governor, and despite knowing the Ben-Hurs are innocent, Messala sentences Judah to galley duty and imprisons his mother and sister. Judah vows to return and exact revenge.
