Conscripted into the Devon Yeomanry, he served with distinction in Italy and Sicily, only to contract hepatitis, which temporarily halted his artistic pursuits. Undeterred, John then joined the Army Bureau For Current Affairs - Play Unit, where he toured England, France, and Germany, sharing his talents with audiences across the continent. Subsequently, John devoted many years to the theatre, refining his craft and earning recognition as a skilled and versatile performer. Ultimately, he expanded his repertoire by transitioning to film, where he had the privilege of sharing the screen with esteemed colleagues such as David Niven and John Mills.
