Biography

Lew Wallace, the son of the esteemed governor of Indiana, spent his formative years in Indianapolis, where the city's vibrant atmosphere and sense of community likely had a profound impact on his early life and development.

As a young man, Wallace's sense of patriotism and duty led him to enlist in the Mexican War, where he gained valuable experience and skills that would serve him well in his future endeavors.

Following his military service, Wallace pursued a career in law, becoming a respected and accomplished attorney in his own right. His impressive credentials and reputation earned him a seat in the Indiana State Senate, where he made significant contributions to the state's governance and development.

When the Civil War broke out, Wallace answered the call to duty once again, serving with distinction in the Union army and rising through the ranks to become a major general. His bravery and strategic thinking were instrumental in repelling a daring Confederate raid on Washington, D.C. in 1864, led by the notorious General Jubal Early.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, Wallace was appointed governor of New Mexico Territory, where he played a crucial role in shaping the region's future. Later, he was appointed minister to Turkey, further expanding his diplomatic and cultural horizons.

However, it is perhaps Wallace's literary talents that have had the most lasting impact on history. He was a prolific author, penning numerous works of fiction and non-fiction. But it is his novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" that has become his most enduring legacy. This sweeping epic, which tells the story of a Jewish prince's struggles against the backdrop of ancient Rome, has been adapted into a successful play and numerous films, including the iconic 1959 production starring Charlton Heston.
