Donald Trump was born to German immigrant parents, his father becoming a multi-millionaire by building tenements in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania in 1968, Trump worked in his father's company before setting up his own business in Manhattan in 1974. He quickly built a fortune through real estate in New York and married Ivana Trump in 1977, with whom he had three children. The couple divorced in 1992.
Trump's international popularity increased in 1983 with the construction of the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, a 202-meter-high building with 58 floors. He acquired Eastern Airlines in 1989, renaming it Trump Shuttle, but sold it after three years due to poor operating figures. In 1990, he opened the Trump Taj Mahal hotel-casino in Atlantic City, but the construction resulted in unexpectedly high expenses.
Trump married Marla Maple in 1993 and they remained together until 1999. In 1998, he opened the Trump International Hotel and Tower at Columbus Circle, and later completed the Trump World Tower in Manhattan in 2001. He appeared on the US television show "The Apprentice" from 2003 to 2005.
