Terence Longdon's career in the Carry On series began with his appearance in four early black and white films. He had significant roles in the first two films, playing Miles Heywood in Carry On Sergeant and romantic lead Ted York in Carry On Nurse. His character in Nurse, a journalist who falls for a nurse, was a departure from his usual typecast.
Longdon missed the next film in the series, Carry On Teacher, but returned for a cameo role in Carry On Constable. He then appeared in Carry On Regardless, but his role was limited to just a few scenes.
Terence Longdon's early career began with a television play in 1951, and he went on to appear in several films, including Simon and Laura, Helen Of Troy, Jumping For Joy, Doctor At Large, Another Time, Another Place, What A Wopper, and Ben Hur.
On television, he starred in the children's series Garry Halliday and appeared in shows such as The Army Game, Danger Man, Ivanhoe, and Emergency Ward 10.
Later in his career, Longdon returned to the theatre, playing in several long runs in the West End and touring the United States with the Old Vic. He also appeared in episodes of The New Avengers and The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
Terence Longdon's stage work included performances with Peter Cushing, Stanley Baker, John Gielgud, and Paul Schofield. He understudied Schofield and completed over 1000 performances in the comedy The Secretary Bird.
In his later years, Longdon appeared in Coronation Street and As Seen On TV. He retired from acting in 2003.
Terence Longdon was born Hubert Tuelly Longdon in May 1922 in Newark-On-Trent, Nottinghamshire. He originally planned to work in the Civil Service, but joined the Fleet Air Arm during World War II. After the war, he enrolled at RADA and began his stage career.
Longdon was married twice, first to actress Barbara Jefford from 1953 to 1960, and then to Gillian Conyers from 2004 until his death in 2011 at the age of 88.
