A former world lightweight boxing champion, Johnnie Bradfield, flees for his life after a reporter's death in his apartment, leading to a mistaken assumption that he perished in a car crash. He assumes a new identity, Jack Dorney, and finds refuge at a rural Arizona farm, where he forms connections with a group of reform school kids and their sister, Peggy. As Johnnie and Peggy grow closer, two threats emerge to disrupt his new life: the temptation to return to boxing, which could reveal his true identity, and the relentless pursuit of NYPD Detective Monty Phelan, who seeks to prove Johnnie's survival and revive his own tarnished career.
