The movie follows private detective John Klute as he investigates the disappearance of his friend Tom Gruneman, with the only lead being a mysterious letter Tom wrote to Manhattan call girl Bree Daniel. As John and Bree work together to uncover the truth, they develop a complicated personal relationship and embark on a journey through Bree's world of prostitution. As they get closer to finding Tom, they realize that a violent john from Bree's past may be involved in his disappearance and may be a threat to Bree's life.
