In the early 19th century, James Reavis, a cunning con artist, dedicates years to fabricating documents that will grant him control over the entire Arizona territory. He finds a young girl, whom he believes to be an orphan, and hires a governess to teach her the customs of the Spanish nobility. He creates a fictional family history for her, tracing her ancestry back to a mythical Spanish nobleman. Reavis then infiltrates a Spanish monastery for three years to access its library, where he alters documents to support his claim. After gaining the necessary documents, he joins a gypsy band to access the library of a Spanish nobleman, further manipulating the records to his advantage. Ultimately, Reavis marries the now-adult woman and files a claim as her husband, the Baron of Arizona.
