In February 2001, Robert Hanssen, a 25-year FBI veteran, is arrested for espionage. The story takes a step back to January, when Eric O'Neill, a computer specialist, is assigned to clerk for Hanssen and document his every move. Initially, Hanssen is portrayed as a devout Catholic with a questionable personal life, but O'Neill grows to respect him. As the investigation unfolds, O'Neill's wife becomes increasingly uneasy about Hanssen's intrusive behavior.
