Reality Winner, a young woman from Texas, grows up with a strong sense of activism, influenced by her pacifist father. She dreams of doing humanitarian work abroad, but instead joins the US Air Force, where she becomes a translator. After two years, she's assigned to an office job, producing translations that lead to military attacks. Reality faces a moral dilemma, trying to repress her feelings by engaging in excessive sports, volunteering, and donating. She eventually joins the NSA as a translator to support her ill father and becomes disillusioned. When media reports of Russian hacking during the presidential election surface, Reality decides to leak secret documents to the website "The Intercept", putting herself at risk of being caught by the FBI.
