After being wounded in Vietnam, Hayes Hodges' dreams of success are shattered. He returns to America and becomes a disillusioned lawyer, using his skills to defend Colonel Terry Childers, who is accused of sparking a deadly incident at a protest. Hodges feels compelled to take on the case because Childers had saved his life during the war.
