In 19th century Colombia, a man falls in love with a woman named Fermina Daza, the daughter of a mule trader. He writes her letters, serenades her, and speaks poetically of love, but she eventually sees his love as an illusion and marries a cultured physician instead. The man, Florentino Ariza, then spends years carrying a torch for Fermina, finding solace in the arms of other women but never truly loving anyone else.
