Thommayanti, the pen name of the renowned Thai novelist and former legislator Khun Ying Wimon Chiamcharoen, was born as Wimon Siriphaibun. With a career spanning multiple decades, she has made a significant impact in the literary world, leaving behind a legacy of iconic works.
One of her most notable creations is the historical fantasy romance novel, Thawiphop, which tells the story of a woman who time travels from the 20th century to Rama V-era Siam. This captivating tale has been adapted into various forms, including a film, stage play, musical, television series, and a 2004 film, Siam Renaissance.
Another remarkable work by Thommayanti is Khu Kam, a romance novel that explores the love story of a Thai woman and a Japanese soldier during World War II in Thailand. This poignant tale has been transformed into a film, musical stage, and television series.
In addition to her writing prowess, Wimon is a skilled orator, having delivered public speeches on several occasions. During the 6 October 1976 Massacre, she played a significant role in the "housewife society", a group of wives of military generals, and made public speeches against the students who agitated for democratic reform.
Wimon's career has not been without controversy, however. In 1976, she was appointed by the junta that took control of the country as a legislator and member of the National Reform Council, following the mass murder of students. Later, in 1979, she was elected as a senator.
In 1986, the Supreme Court of Justice found Wimon guilty of committing adultery with Group Captain Akhom Atthawetworawut, an officer who was also a senator, while serving as a senator. Following this conviction, the Senate resolved to dismiss her from senatorial office.
Despite this controversy, King Bhumibol Adulyadej awarded Wimon the royal title Khun Ying in 2005, a testament to her enduring contributions to Thai literature and culture.
In recognition of her outstanding achievements, the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Thailand, through the Department of Cultural Promotion, honored Khun Ying Wimon with the highest honor bestowed upon Thai artists by naming her "National Artist" (Literature) in 2012.
