Pau, a renowned cinematographer from Hong Kong, has enjoyed a distinguished career in the film industry. His journey began with a degree in Filmmaking from the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute in 1983. Shortly after, he directed his first feature film, "The Temptation of Dance," and "Wu du qing chou" (also known as "Misty"),in the 1990s.
Throughout his career, Pau has had the privilege of collaborating with some of the most acclaimed directors in the industry. He has worked alongside John Woo on the iconic film "Dip hyut shueng hung" (1989),also known as "The Killer." He has also teamed up with Hark Tsui on projects such as "Double Team," "Hua yue jia qi" (aka "Love in the Time of Twilight"),and "The Chinese Feast." Additionally, Pau has worked with Ronny Yu on films like "The Bride with White Hair" (aka "Bride With White Hair"),"Bride of Chucky," "Ye ban ge sheng" (aka "The Phantom Lover"),and "Warriors of Virtue."
One of Pau's most notable collaborations was with Ang Lee on the critically acclaimed film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (aka "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"). His poetic approach to lighting and stunning camera work earned him a nomination for the Oscar and seven major US critics' awards, making him the first Hong Kong cinematographer to receive such recognition.
Pau has continued to work on numerous major films, including "Shoot 'Em Up," "The Promise," "Perhaps Love," "The Forbidden Kingdom," and "Confucius." He has also ventured into producing and directing, with his latest project being the film "Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal."
Throughout his illustrious career, Pau has received numerous accolades for his work. He has won six awards for best cinematography at the Hong Kong Film Awards and has been nominated a staggering 25 times by international critics and award bodies.
