Martijn Smits, a talented film director, was born in 1975 and graduated from the Dutch High school of Arts with a degree in Directing in 2002. He began his career as an assistant-director on Dutch feature films before transitioning to directing his own projects.
Smits' early success came with two award-winning short films, "The Bug" (2007) and "Brother's Keeper" (2008),which earned him a Silver Melies nomination and a first-place win at the NBC Universal Shocking Shorts Awards, respectively.
In 2011, Smits directed his first feature film, "Zombibi" (also known as "Kill Zombie"),a Dutch zombie comedy that received a worldwide release in 2012. This was followed by his work on the comedy cop show "Popoz" for Comedy Central, which he co-wrote and directed. The show's first season was a huge success, airing in several countries including Germany, Belgium, Poland, and Sweden. A second season was released in 2014, and a feature film adaptation, "Popoz-the movie", was released in 2015 and received a Golden Film Award for selling over 100,000 tickets.
Smits' continued to work on various projects, including directing 14 episodes of the Nickelodeon adventure series "De Ludwigs" (also known as "Hunter Street") in 2017.
In 2018, Smits released his third feature film, "Superjuffie!" (also known as "Super Miss"),a Dutch superhero film that became a box office smash, selling almost 300,000 tickets. The film's success led to the announcement of a sequel, which is set to be released in December 2020.
Smits' most recent work includes directing the family film "Mees Kees in de wolken", which was a huge success in cinemas during the Christmas holidays in 2019 and received a Golden Film Award for selling over 100,000 tickets within two weeks of its release.
