Frances Mayes, a renowned poet, essayist, and professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University, embarked on a transformative journey after relocating to Cortona, Italy in 1990. She purchased and meticulously renovated a rundown Tuscan farmhouse, Bramasole, which literally translates to "yearning for the sun". This picturesque abode became her new home, where she drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape and cultural heritage.

Mayes' literary endeavors have been prolific and acclaimed. Her memoir, "Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy", published in 1996, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the same year. This was followed by a second memoir, "Bella Tuscany". Her poetry collections include "Sunday in Another Country", "After Such Pleasures", "The Arts of Fire", "Hours", "The Book of Summer", and "Ex Voto". Additionally, she is the author of "The Discovery of Poetry", a college textbook.
