Faye Wong, born Wong Jing Man, is a Chinese singer-songwriter and actress. Her mother, a singer, and father, a mining engineer, moved to Hong Kong when she was 18. She began taking singing lessons and was introduced to Cinepoly Records, where she recorded three albums under the name Shirley Wong. Unsatisfied with her career, she left for New York to carve her own identity and returned several months later.
Given creative freedom, Wong favored R'n'B sounds and started writing her own songs. She released the self-titled album "Faye Wong" in 1994, which had no cover but a blank white casing and booklet. The album cemented her attitude towards music and media, focusing on music rather than frills and publicity.
Wong left Cinepoly in 1997 and signed with EMI, releasing several albums. She worked with the Cocteau Twins and released her first Sony album "To Love", which earned her nominations in various categories.
In her personal life, Wong married Dou Wei, the former lead singer of Black Panther, and had a daughter before divorcing. She has been romantically linked with Nicholas Tse Ting-fung, Anita Mui Yim-fong, and Leon Lai Ming.
Wong is known for being aloof with media and fans, skipping out awards ceremonies. She won the Best Actress award at a Swedish film festival for her role in Chungking Express and the Best Actress award in Hong Kong for Chinese Odyssey 2002.
