Born in Swansea, Wales, Hayward's early life was marked by a relocation to Australia, where he joined the Army and, remarkably, became an officer at the tender age of nineteen. Despite his rapid rise through the ranks, Hayward never envisioned a long-term career in the military.
Following his stint in the Army, Hayward pursued his passion for the performing arts by attending the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, also known as NIDA. This marked the beginning of a successful stage career, during which he appeared in a wide range of productions, from Shakespearean classics to the works of Tennessee Williams. Simultaneously, he honed his skills as a director, leading touring companies and gaining valuable experience in the process. As a nod to his British heritage, Hayward adopted the forename Chard, a tribute to a renowned British Army officer.
Hayward's personal life has been marked by two marriages, first to the former Miss Australia, Sarah Gray, and subsequently to actress Cynthia Killion. Together, they have two sons, including the talented actor Adam Gray-Hayward.
In his later years, Hayward made the decision to relocate his family from Los Angeles to Ventura, a charming coastal city situated approximately 60 miles north of the former. This move allowed him to start anew and pursue fresh opportunities in a picturesque setting.
