Andy Alvarez, a multifaceted director and producer, hails from Cali, Colombia, but now calls Vancouver, British Columbia home. Having graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production, Alvarez's creative journey has been marked by numerous accolades and milestones.
Her directorial debut, the poignant short film La Mariposa, is a deeply personal project that explores her own life story. This critically acclaimed film won the prestigious Leo Award for Best Student Production in June 2018 and is now available to stream on CBC Gem and Air Canada.
The following year, Alvarez was selected as one of only 10 talented filmmakers to participate in the Vancouver International Film Festival's inaugural Talent Lab program in the fall of 2018. Her subsequent short film, Our Home, earned her the coveted Lindalee Tracey Award at the 2019 Hot Docs Film Festival.
In February 2020, Alvarez was among the top six filmmakers chosen to direct a short film for the Crazy 8's Film Society competition. She co-wrote and directed the film SOL, featuring the talents of Rukiya Bernard and Aria Birch.
Furthermore, Alvarez and her team at Studio 104 Entertainment were awarded a significant Telus Storyhive Funded Pilot grant, worth $20,000, with a release date set for summer 2020.
