A descendant of a treasure-hunting family, Benjamin Franklin Gates learns about a national treasure from his grandfather. He sets out to find it, but his father, who lost 20 years chasing the treasure without success, disapproves. When his accomplice Ian tries to steal the Declaration of Independence for a clue, Ben refuses and they become hostile. Ben tips the FBI about the possible theft, but they don't believe him. He decides to steal the document himself to protect it from Ian. Ben meets Abigail, the archives curator, and together with his partner Riley, they work to decrypt the clues and rescue the treasure before Ian can get his hands on it.
