A wealthy American woman unwittingly employs a mysterious Austrian stranger she meets on a pier, unaware that he is actually a fugitive.

The Bullock family hires a new butler, Godfrey Smith, who is discovered by the daughter Irene at the docks, impressed by his good manners and hired on a whim. Despite being a great success, Godfrey keeps his past a secret, which becomes complicated when his old flame reappears and causes tension with Irene's sister Cordelia.
