In 1911, Vernon Castle, a struggling comedian, meets Irene Foote, a stage-struck performer, at a New Jersey beach. They get married and try to make it big as dancers, but initially face financial struggles. However, their talent is discovered by agent Maggie Sutton, who launches them to international fame as the world's top ballroom dancers. Just as they reach the pinnacle of success, World War I breaks out.
