Senator Ransom Stoddard returns home to Shinbone for Tom Doniphon's funeral and shares the story of how it all began. With nothing left but law books, Stoddard took a kitchen job at the Ericsons' restaurant, where he met his future wife Hallie. The territory is seeking statehood, and Stoddard is chosen as a representative over Valance, who continues to wreak havoc on the town.
