In 1966, Helen Reddy arrives in New York with her daughter, a suitcase, and $230, only to have her recording contract hopes dashed. Despite this, she decides to stay and pursue a singing career, struggling to make ends meet. With the help of rock journalist Lillian Roxon, Helen writes and sings "I Am Woman," an anthem for the feminist movement. She also meets talent manager Jeff Wald, who becomes her agent and husband, but his drug addiction slowly poisons their relationship.
