Norman Bates returns home 22 years after being released from a mental institution, where he was deemed legally sane. Despite the protests of Lila Loomis, Norman rekindles a friendship with Mary, a local waitress, as he tries to adjust to normal life. However, a series of murders occurs near the Bates Motel, leaving the question: has Mrs. Bates returned to manipulate Norman or is someone else responsible for the bloodshed?
