Shawn Holloway's life has been marked by hardship since her father's departure at age 11, leaving her to cope with a troubled mother. Now an adult, she works in a bank and is involved with her married colleague Matthew Richmond. When she discovers Matthew's wife is pregnant, Shawn decides to end her life. She attempts to muster the courage to jump from the building's roof, but is thwarted by her neighbors who alert the police.
