In this film, Czech pilots who fled to England during World War II find themselves in labor camps after the war, suspected of anti-Communist views. The story jumps between a post-war labor camp and wartime England, where a young pilot named Karel forms a bond with an older pilot named Franta. Meanwhile, Karel crash-lands in the countryside and meets Susan, a kind-hearted English woman whose husband is missing in action. As Karel and Susan grow closer, Franta becomes smitten with Susan, complicating their relationships. The film explores the complexities of innocence, love, friendship, and the harsh realities of war, ultimately asking what happens when the conflict finally ends.
