In February 2001, Robert Hanssen, a 25-year FBI veteran, is arrested for espionage. The story takes a step back to January, when Eric O'Neill, a computer specialist, is assigned to clerk for Hanssen and document his every move. Initially, Hanssen is portrayed as a devout Catholic with a questionable personal life, but O'Neill grows to respect him. As the investigation unfolds, O'Neill's wife becomes increasingly uneasy about Hanssen's intrusive behavior. The film explores how Hanssen is caught and why he chose to spy, as well as O'Neill's efforts to balance his professional duties with his personal life.
