Dr. Simon Sparrow, a young general practitioner, leaves his mundane life to become a medical officer on the all-male cargo ship "the Lotus". He encounters eccentric characters, including the captain, and gets into humorous situations. While in Rio, he meets Hélène Colbert, a French singer, and falls for her. When the captain is forced to take on two female passengers, including Hélène, Simon is thrilled.
