In 1893 London, H.G. Wells unveils his time machine to skeptical friends, including the notorious Jack the Ripper, Dr. John Leslie Stevenson. Unbeknownst to Wells, Stevenson escapes using the time machine, leaving Wells to follow him to 1979 San Francisco.
