Alan, a film producer, runs the Bargain Basement Film Festival after his father's heart attack, while hiding his condition from the academy-appointed Adjudicator and the quirky filmmakers and actors competing for the best film award. However, the festival has been bought by Tugg Speedman, a low-budget horror movie director, who has entered his time-traveling gangster film, Gods of Shoreditch. Alan and Esme, Tugg's estranged girlfriend and co-star, discover a hidden gem film by a homeless entrant, Iron Mike, and must go against his father, Tugg, and the other entrants to ensure it wins the best film award.

Alan, a budding filmmaker, is devastated by his recent breakup and must put his dreams on hold to care for his ailing father. Instead, he's thrust into managing the family's struggling film festival, which his father's business partner, Gabriel, uses to line his own pockets.
