Joe Branch, said to be Jesse James' son, arrives in Coffeyville, Kansas, seeking proof of his parentage. He rescues Kate Manning from a lynching mob after she kills the son of a prominent citizen to defend her honor. Kate's father was a Jesse James ally, and Joe hopes to learn more by contacting the Daltons. He steals an Army payroll, knowing the Daltons intended to do the same, but his plan backfires when they come after him.
