A couple, Vic and Melinda, are stuck in a loveless marriage in the small town of Little Wesley. To avoid divorce, Melinda is allowed to have multiple affairs, but Vic becomes obsessed with the unsolved murder of one of her former lovers, Martin McRae. Vic takes credit for the killing to scare off Melinda's current lover, but the community misinterprets his claims as dark humor.
