In 2003, the statistics on K2, known as the "wild mountain" or "ruthless mountain", were impressive: only 240 climbers reached the summit, while more than 60 perished in the ascent, a rate of one death for every four survivors. The 2004 climbing season was even more deadly, with only two out of five talented and determined women making it out alive, and the remaining three disappearing in the mountains. Despite these dangers, new women climbers continue to test their strength and will against K2 every year, including Spanish climber and fashion model Araceli Segarra during the 2002 climbing season.
