The movie takes place during the Great Depression. A bank robber, Ben Harper, hides $10,000 in his daughter's doll before he's caught and executed. After his death, a con man named Harry Powell tries to find the money by marrying Ben's widow, Willa, and manipulating her into revealing the location of the cash. Meanwhile, Ben's son John and daughter Pearl try to keep the secret safe from Harry, who becomes increasingly threatening.
