A renowned scientist's professional and personal life is put under intense scrutiny after he agrees to reveal the dark secrets of the tobacco industry on a high-profile news program, leading to a fierce backlash from influential entities that threaten to destroy his reputation and safety.

Lowell Bergman, a 60 Minutes producer, senses a story when Jeff Wigand, a former tobacco researcher, refuses to speak to him. When Wigand's former employer, Brown and Williamson, pressures him to honor a confidentiality agreement, he stands his ground and confides in Bergman. Despite a troubled marriage, Wigand risks everything by appearing on camera with Mike Wallace, potentially facing arrest for contempt of court.
