A woman named Martha is on vacation in Rome with her father when he suddenly passes away. She returns home to her mother, who is critical of her appearance and lifestyle. Martha begins a new chapter in her life, but soon marries a man named Helmuth who is equally cruel and abusive. During their honeymoon, Helmuth forces Martha to give up her job, sends her mother to a mental institution, and subjects her to physical and emotional abuse. Martha tries to adapt to her new life, but eventually discovers that her husband is a sadist and that she is in grave danger.
