A troubled loner, Bob Maconel, contemplates blowing up the Los Angeles tower where he works, but instead takes a revolver to his office to kill colleagues and himself. His supervisor torments him, and he confides in his fish, who urge him to go through with it. Just as Bob is about to take action, a colleague surprisingly does the same, and Bob becomes a hero. He tries to help a woman with a bright smile, who was severely wounded, find joy in life, despite everyone believing it's impossible for someone like him.
