Forced into hiding, a journalist is driven to uncover the truth behind his friend's suspicious death, a prominent anti-apartheid activist in South Africa.

In South Africa, a liberal newspaper editor named Donald Woods discovers his views clash with those of Steve Biko, a prominent anti-apartheid activist. After meeting Biko, Woods' opinion is transformed, and they develop a close relationship. However, this new friendship puts Woods and his family in the crosshairs of the Security Police. When Biko's tragic death in police custody sparks outrage, Woods writes a book about his friend's life and struggle, but to publish it, he must take drastic measures and flee the country illegally.
