Jesse Page, a former convict, struggles to reform after his cellmate Larry pressures him to assist with a drug deal. When the deal goes awry, Jesse and Larry flee to a desert motel, where Jesse plots a fresh start by joining a band in Detroit. However, Larry's presence complicates matters, as do the eccentric motel owners and homicidal drug dealers closing in on them.
