Antoine and Christine Doinel, a young couple, live a bohemian life in their neighborhood, where Antoine works as a florist and Christine is a concert violinist and teacher. They have a playful relationship, but their differences in background, with Antoine's troubled childhood and Christine's bourgeois upbringing, create tension. When Christine becomes pregnant, Antoine searches for a better-paying job, leading him to work for an American company and meet Kyoko, the daughter of a Japanese client.
